Loose Opals - Opal Doublets
Since opals are often found as thin layers, decent size pieces are actually quite rare, those thin layers of precious opal are often mounted on dark ironstone, the dark background enhances the play of color of the thin opal, to create doublets and triplets.
Assembled opal doublets and triplets are often used today for mass produced jewelry.
Triplets differ from doublets as opal triplets receive an additional layer of crystal, plastic, and glass as protection.
